Trapped intestinal gas in Golden Retriever

Question
My 10 year male Golden retriever shows a significanat amount of trapped gas in his intestines but not his stomach.  We thought he may have ate a pesticide his symptoms are weakness in hind legs, lethargy, vomitting, panting.  the blood tests came back with slightly elevated white count but all others in normal range.  The Vet is stumped.  after x-rays showing no gas in stomach or other organs just in the intestines.  he was given a shot of penicillin last night at the emergency care and the vet today gave 5 day prescription for antibotic and an injection of fluids and some barium.  OUr dog has been eating small portions of chicken/rice and not vomitting which is encouraging and he has been drinking some water too.  He seems fine when he's standing up, but cannot stand up on his own. His hind legs seem to have no strength.  Is there any holistic rememdy i can give him to release the trapped gas any more quickly

Answer
Hi Niki,

Thank you for writing to me about your Golden Retriever.  I am unclear about the relationship of intestional gas to limb weakness.  I would definitely urge you to check for tick issues, such as lyme disease.

As for gas, try gas-x, BHI Stomach.  What I recommend most is ginger!  You can get the herb in the health food store.  It is an anti-inflamatory and will ease the swelling of the colon.

You must also make absolutely sure that your dog isn't allergic to chicken or rice.  Rice is very high on the allergy chart.  It is typically used with boiled chicken for diarrhea.  If you dog has an allergy, then the rice and/or chicken can produce gas.

I wish you all the luck in the world.
