My Puppy is going to be Evicted! =(

Question
Labman,

hello.  We just got a new puppy the other day (7 weeks old).  He barks a bit at night when he's in his crate but I ignore it for about 20 -30 mins until he falls asleep.  The other day I got a phone call from my landlord saying that while they were showing the vacant apartment next to ours they heard our puppy barking constantly for the entire 20 mins they were in there.  Apparently our puppy barks non stop while we're away.  I don't know how to deal with this situation because I can't stop him from barking when I'm at work and I can't be there 24/7.  We have a 2 year old Boston terrier who is very sweet and she is in her crate next to the puppy's.  The two dogs can see each other but I guess that doesn't help at all.  I don't want to be evicted and I'm really worried. You can hear the barking no matter where the puppy is in the house. How can I stop the puppy from barking when I'm not home? HELP!

Answer
I wish I had some better ideas.  The trick I use with new puppies at night might help some.  At bed time, with a new puppy, I have found lying down in front of the crate like you were going to sleep and speaking softly to it, or singing, until it settles down and goes to sleep works very well.  Follow the pattern, a period of active play, outside to eliminate, and then into the crate.

Then there is always the peanut butter in the Kong trick or kibble balls.  When he wakes up, he could get too busy working for food to bark.  I am not sure this will be enough to save you.  Likely he is too young for doggy day care.
