Dog Scratch

Question
Hello!
I have a pretty quick and simple question about my 2 year old Jack Russell. She was scratched on her back leg, it doesn't look too deep and it's just bleeding a little. She's not crying but I thought I could maybe rub neosporin over the scratch to help it heal. I was just wondering if this is okay or not. Do you know? Thanks for your time! :)

Answer
Hi Sarah,

Not every injury requires a vet's care.
Keep the wound clean, wash it at least once a day with mild soap and water, gently dry the area and then apply an antibacterial ointment, such as the Neosporin you asked about.

If you apply the Neosporin just before you walk your dog, it will give it a chance to work, rather than being immediately licked off. 3M Pet Care, makes a product called "Liquid Bandage Spray" you could also use. It protects minor cuts and wounds with a waterproof, breathable seal.

If the wound doesn't improve over the next two or three days, then you should have your vet take a look at it.

Best of luck,

Patti
