X-ray of dogs leg

Question
I know it's sort of medical - so if you cant answer I understand - but I was wondering if there is any information sites you might recommend for me. My dog is in the vet hospital right now his front right ankle was swollen out of the blue - there is no fever, and although he can put some pressure on it when needed it is very painful. The Dr did xrays and said it was the strangest thing he had ever seen - all the bone in the joint is black.... he didnt think cancer since it was a quick onset and not gradual - he's also a puppy (well sort of hes only 1.5 years) so Im just wondering if there is any site you'd recommend me reading up on xrays showing black....

Answer
Hi Julia,

When a body undergoes x-rays, different parts of the body allow varying amounts of the x-ray beams to pass through. The soft tissues in the body (such as blood, skin, fat, and muscle) allow most of the x-ray to pass through and appear dark gray on the film or digital media. A bone or a tumor, which is more dense than the soft tissues, allows few of the x-rays to pass through and appears white on the x-ray.

Perhaps your dog dog had some malnutrition as a puppy, or maybe he has an underlying condition which could cause a problem with bone density.

Best of luck,

Patti
