Dogs in heat.

My female cairn is in her first heat and my young male is going nuts. I don't want to neuter until I know whether they have a chance in the show ring.  Is there anything I can put on the male dogs nose to lessen the effect of her scent on him?

Try putting a diaper on your bitch with a bit of vicks vapor rub on the outside of the diaper to mask the smell. I find that the cloth diapers with the velcro seams work great for this, because you can layer the vicks. Before you put the pad on the diaper, you can smear some vicks on the inside of the diaper under where the pad goes. This keeps it AWAY from your bitch's vulva, but wont rub off on anything either. Then rub some on the outside of the diaper and rub it in until it fades from the cloth.

You can put a bit of vicks under your dog's nose, or ontop of it, but most males will eventually lick this off, and of course, ingesting it is never a good idea so I don't really recommend it if you can avoid it. That is a handy tip for traveling in shows if you male catches a wiff of a pssing bitch in heat, slather some vicks on him and keep going. I'd also move your male to another room of the house if possible.
