glucosamine for our dog

Question
Hello. We have a 13-year-old choc. lab who seems a little stiff moving about. I have heard of others giving their dogs glucosamine--the same kind that a human would take. Do you know anything about what the proper dosage of glucosamine would be for a 75-pound lab? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Shelley,
I have a 60 lb lab with hip dysplasia. She is on 1500 mg of Glucosamine a day, and the tablets we give her have a little bit of chondroiton in them. She also gets 2000 mg of MSM. The Glucosamine promotes joint health and the MSM will help some with pain. Try to read labels and find brands that are purely Glucosamine/Chondroiton & MSM and don't have any add-ins. This should help some, but at some point I suggest taking him to your veterinarian, who can prescribe or recommend medications that may help him even more.
Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions.
Ashley

Shelley - I made an error in my original response. The 1500 of Glucosamine is what she gets each time (morning and night) for a total of 3000 a day. The Chondroiton content in each pill is 1200 mg. I use Spring Valley brand vitamins from Wal-Mart, they're very affordable. There is a triple strength on the G/C that has 1500 and 1200 mgs respectively in each pill, so you only have to give one pill with breakfast and one with dinner. And the MSM is 1000 per pill for a total of 2000 per day.
Sorry for the error and let me know if I can do anything else for you!
