Housebreaking a Beagle

Question
We are currently using crate training to potty train a 1-year-old beagle.  It doesn't seem to be going as well as it should be.  She urinates outside but refuses to defecate.  Any suggestions?  I'm a behaviorist so feel free to get technical if needed. Thanks

Answer
May be more a physical thing.  Take her outside at times before she has had a bowel moment in the house.  Make sure when she is outside, she moves around enough to stimulate her body.  If she doesn't do anything, put her back in the crate for a while and try again.  Don't let her loose in the house until she goes.  Then praise her.  The old antecedent, behavior, consequence.

Having a good pack structure reduces such problems.  The dogs see all the
people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in
the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members
outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by
reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class
or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with
a treat. Start at http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/  I am not sure Paffenburger and Scott go into how to be top dog.

Thank you for giving the older dog a home.  I hope my answer helps you work out the problem.
