Stopping older dog from peeing indoors

Question
I have two indoor dogs ages 3 and 4.  One or both periodically pee on the floor.  It is not constant and I cannot determine any pattern to this behavior.  I have tried everything I can think of to stop this behavior, but nothing has worked.  They have ruined the carpet; which we are having to replace.  We must find a solution before the new flooring is installed.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
There are many posible causes for this.
1. inconsistant house training
2. incomplete cleaning of old accidents
3. inconsistant access to water.
4. submissive peeing, when dogs are frightened.
5. many many more possibilities.

some of these causes can be brought under controlled easily, others I would suggest working with a trainer to resolve the problem. replacing the carpet may help, but if the location is the same the smell of urine could have penetrated the wood under it.

The best solution to cover all or most of the issues is to go back to basics, use kennel/crate training, when ever the dogs are not supervised, they can be in the kennel. if you don't agree with kennel/crate training, then paper training but the basics still apply confinment and supervision. With consistancy, and patience you can have reliably trained dogs and a clean floor/carpet. Regular outings for potty breaks, gradually lentghening the time the dogs have to hold their bladders. 3-4 year old dogs should not go no longer than 8-9 hours with out a potty break. Remember that they cannot open doors to go out, when you are not home. ensure they go out before you leave and as soon as possible when you are gone for longer periods. Some times we do not think about ourselves in these situations. We do have a part in our dogs behavior. thank you for your question.  if our dogs water bowl is dry or not available it has a part in our dogs potty habits. going back to the basics is always a good place to start. when we get stumped. and older dogs can be retrained. reinforcing going outside is also a good thing to do. Getting excited when they go around you can with time over come the punishment style training many people do for lack of education on more humane training styles.

Hope this helps
