Question
I have a 1 year old miniature schnauzer that loves to chew!!! Today, she chewed up an ink pen. We didn't think she got any ink until she threw up and it was black! She threw up three times and it's been awhile since then. Is this something that will pass or should we call the vet? She is acting fine now. I thought they should quit chewing once they get their adult teeth.

Answer
Yes, I would call your veterinarian to have her checked out to be sure that everything is okay. Hopefully, it has all cleared her system by now. Check out this site and find the number of your local poison control center: http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm  They can be a good resource if you do not know if something might be poisonous or not if your dog should get into something again in the future.

Yes, there is increased chewing during teething time, but chewing is also a stress reliever for dogs, and some dogs remain heavy chewers much of their lives. Get her appropriate chew toys so that she hopefully spends more time working on them rather than other items she might find lying around the house or yard.
