finding the right dog

Question
Hi Kristin,

First of all, I would like to thank you for this free service. Nowadays it is hard to find people who give a helping hand, and for that I thank you.

I currently own two dogs, a Great Pyrenees and a Border Collie. I live in the boondocks and have a decently sized yard and my dogs live and sleep with me, and since I work at home they are with me most of the time. For a while I have thought about getting another dog, but I want a dog who will provide adequate protection for my home and myself. I plan to take the dog with me on walks around town (and my area is not too safe), so I want a dog that is physically imposing, has a reputation as a guard dog, will fearlessly defend me if something arises, and will not have any trouble living with my other two dogs (both are male). In the past my great pyrenees and my border collie have attacked each other due to the fact that the great pyrenees is a bit domineering. What kind of dog would you suggest would fit in with that pair? I would like to have a dobermann or a rottweiler, german shepherd or belgian Shepherd, but I much rather prefer the doberman. I just wanted to know what an expert like you would suggest. Thanks a lot!

Answer
Those would be the top breeds I would recommend also, and if a Doberman is the breed you prefer, then go with one. Dobes are VERY loyal to there owners, and also get along with other animals-and they do look imposing to anyone looking to cause trouble. but you must find a good breeder,as some Dobermans can be nervous which is NOT a good thing. I think in general a Doberman will fit in perfectly with your lifestyle they are also fairly high energy so walks are what they do need. So my vote goes towards the Doberman
