Finding the right guard dog

Question
Hi Labman,

First of all, I would like to thank you for this free service. Nowadays it is hard to find people who give a helping hand, and for that I thank you.

I currently own two dogs, a Great Pyrenees and a Border Collie. I live in the boondocks and have a decently sized yard and my dogs live and sleep with me, and since I work at home they are with me most of the time. For a while I have thought about getting another dog, but I want a dog who will provide adequate protection for my home and myself. I plan to take the dog with me on walks around town (and my area is not too safe), so I want a dog that is physically imposing, has a reputation as a guard dog, will fearlessly defend me if something arises, and will not have any trouble living with my other two dogs (both are male). In the past my great pyrenees and my border collie have attacked each other due to the fact that the great pyrenees is a bit domineering. What kind of dog would you suggest would fit in with that pair? I would like to have a dobermann or a rottweiler, german shepherd or belgian Shepherd, but I much rather prefer the doberman. I just wanted to know what an expert like you would suggest. Thanks a lot!

Answer
In many cases my advice as a expert is to follow your heart.  Get the Doberman.  Some individuals within any of the those breeds would be excellent.  Dogs vary so much within a breed, that nobody can say which breed might best fit your needs.  I know there are Dobermans out there that would be excellent.  Even somebody foolish enough to attack somebody with a Great Pyrenees will think twice if you have a Doberman.  Talk to some breeders and explain what you want. some lines are too soft, and others too aggressive.

To maintain peace in your pack, I would suggest getting a female and having her spayed.  Otherwise count on no end of problems especially if the 2 males you have now are not neutered.  I think the trend now is toward getting security dogs fixed.  They lose little of their drive and stay on task much better.
