vomiting / spit-up

Question
I have a Papillon, who is perfect in all ways; BUT, when she drinks a lot, she will spit up.  I try to watch her, and I will 'burp' her when she drinks, but sometimes, she'll drink and then, in ~3-5 minutes, she'll spit up.  It's always clear, seldom contains any food product.  Her appetite is good, her stool firm; she's playful, obedient, and very smart.  Her only drawback is the spit-up, and that's minor, compared to all the love she gives.  Any ideas?  I've seen a bowl advertised from Canada that's supposed to help, but was hoping you'd have another idea.  I plan on ordering the bowl if I can't find one locally.
Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Fletcher,

Very cold water can cause a dog (especially small breeds) to throw up. Try filling your dog's bowl with tepid water, instead filling it with cold.

Many dogs drink their water too fast and this often causes them to regurgitate the water after drinking. If you don't want to order the special water bowl, try leaving less water in your dog's bowl, so your dog can't gulp down a lot of water at once. If he's very thirsty after a walk or playing, gradually give him more water over about 5 minutes.
Of course leaving less in the water bowl means you'll have to keep an eye on the bowl, so it never runs dry.

If you'd like to order that special dog water bowl, try doing a web search for the "Drink Better Bowl", so you can compare prices. Here's one such website:

You can also try searching ebay for that product.

Best of luck,
