Question
I have a beautiful 15 month old female.  She is extremely well socialized to family and strangers, house broken and very obedient.  EXCEPT when we leave the house - even for 1 hour.  We also have a 5 year old shepard/terrier mix who has free reign and NEVER gets into mischief.  The pup has chewed up extension cords, my son'e IPOD, eaten christmas presents from under the tree, and last night had a calender or spaghetti from the kitchen sink and emptied the kitchen garbage can all over the room.  The second I walk in the door she slinks away, sometimes before I even know that she got into trouble - so she is definitely aware that she has done wrong.  I hate to crate her every time I leave the house - but right now there is no alternative.  The other dog never gave me these problems.  Other than the above, this dog is an absolute sweetheart.  Any suggestions?

Answer
HI MARTY
SHEPHERDS BOND AND ARE HIGHLY LOYAL, SO WHEN U LEAVE THIS IS HER CHANCE TO PROVE TO YOU THIS BEHAVIOR IS UPSETTING HER.  ALSO, SHE MIGHT HAVE SEPERATION ANXIETY, U WILL NEED A BEHAVIOR SPECIALISTS TO HELP YOU AS WRITING IS TOO HARD TO EXPLAIN ALL THAT IS NEEDED FOR U TO DO.  DOGS CAN BE BROUGHT OUT OF THIS PROBLEM WITH PATIENCE, LOVE AND PROPER GUIDANCE.
NEVER USE A CRATE FOR PUNISHMENT, LET THE DOOR OPEN AND GAIT OFF THE ROOM, PUT STUFF SO HIGH SHE CANNOT GET INTO ANY TROUBLE.  LIFT ALL SHOES, BOOTS OFF THE FLOOR, WHEN U LEAVE PUT A DOGGIE BISCUIT IN THE CRATE AND A TOY, LET THE DOOR OPEN SO SHE CAN GO INSIDE IT AND LEARN THAT THIS IS HER DEN.
MY DOGS I OFTEN HAVE FOUR AT A TIME INSIDE, I CAN LEAVE AND GO OUT TO WORK ONE, THEY LOOK OUT THE WINDOWS.  THEY NEVER TOUCH A THING, I ALWAYS HAVE A BAG I PLACE GARABAGE IN FOR THE DAY THEN PLACE IN OUTDOOR CONTAINER CAN WITH LID ON IT.
MY DOGS ARE TAUGHT FROM PUPPIES WHAT IS THEIRS AND NOT.  NOW, PUPPIES WILL GET INTO THINGS DURING THE TRAINING PHASE.  BUT, I HAVE TO SAY I HAVE THE BEST BEHAVED SHEPHERDS AND THAT IS MOST LIKELY WHY I HAVE A WAIT LIST FOR PUPPIES.  PEOPLE COME AND RAVE ABOUT THE TEMPERMENTS, BEHAVIOR, TRAINING IN OBEDIENCE, ETC.  ALL DOGS NEED A LEADER AND BOSS TO LOOK UP TO, YOUR DOG JUST HAS NOT DECIDED WHO YET.  KEEP WORKING WITH HER AND NEVER LEAVE GARBAGE LOW, PLACE THE WASTE CAN UP AND GO OUTSIDE AND WAIT, THEN RENTER AND SEE EACH TIME SHE WILL GET BETTER AND BETTER IF CONFINED TO ONE ROOM....PREFERABLE THE KITCHEN.   LET ME KNOW HOW SHE DOES PLEASE.
