Jack Russell peeing everywhere

Question
Hello Kristen,

My son's Jack Russell is 6 month old.  Two weeks ago he suddenly started peeing everywhere.  He used to pee in his crate and at one special place on pads before.  He also started to peeing again (he used to do it some time ago but then stopped) when he's excited to see some people.

Do you have any advice?
Thank you.

Answer
Luda, is he neutered yet? If not, I would recommend making him an appointment as soon as possible. It sounds as if he is becoming mature and beginning 'marking' behavior, which is normal for intact (not neutered) dogs. If he's peeing in his crate, that's not good. You don't want him to continue doing that or you may never get him housebroken. How long is he crated each day? Are you leaving him in there too long without a bathroom break, perhaps?

The excited peeing when meeting people usually will go away on its own if you just ignore it. One thing you can do, though, is whenever he is behaving excitedly towards someone, instruct that person to ignore him. They should not look at him, talk to him, or try to pet him as long as he's acting excitedly. When he has calmed down, then they can calmly call him over to be petted, but if he begins acting excitedly again, they should ignore him. If they cannot resist looking at him, talking to him, or trying to pet him, then you should put him in his crate when they come to your house to visit because they will only encourage the peeing behavior.
