Cough and Eye Discharge

Question
I got my Chihuahua puppy yesterday. He is about 11 weeks old and up to date on shots and worming. He seemed fine when we brought him home last night, but this morning he was taking a nap and it sounded like he was snoring. When he woke up he coughed a little and it sounded like he had congestion in his chest. He has been coughing every once in a while, but never for long. I also noticed last night that he had a bit of eye discharge. It is clear and has no coloring. He has this about everytime he waked up from a sleep. Is there need for alarm or do I need to give some form of medication?

Answer
Hi, I suspect the clear discharge from your chihuahuas eyes is simply tears. Chihuahua's are prone to getting tear staining around their eyes because of how their eyes protrude they pruduce tears to help protect the eyes. I suspect this is the case for your little one, however if the discharge is coloured or the eyes seem red, inflamed or uncomfortable you should consult a vet.

As for the coughing, my guess would be kennel cough. Even though he has been vaccinated they can still get kennel cough. In a young pup I would definately recommend a vet visit. It would be better to be safe then sorry.
