Question
I have a Rat Terrier and it sheds  A LOT!!!!! When we got her, they said she would only shed when she's nervous...boy this dog is nervous a lot. No. We tried brushing her daily, but it didn't help to much...any suggestions??

Answer
Kim,
Oh I do empathize with you! I know how irritating it can
be to keep up after a shedding dog. There really is only so
much you can do.
Daily brushing is a good start and should be maintained
on a constant basis otherwise it will only work for a short time.
You can try using a good organic moisturizing shampoo. A
lot of times shedding is due to extremely dry skin. Keeping
moisture in her skin will help.
Nerves do play a small part in hair loss but not to the
extent of extreme shedding. Shedding is also caused from
the change in seasons. Dogs will go from summer coat to winter coat and back again causing heavy shedding. So all
of these things combined could be the problem.
Most Rat Terriers are high strung to begin with but if she
seems abnormally jumpy you could always try working with a
trainer who specializes in that type of behavior.
If you have a groomer or know of a local one, see if they will order you an organic oatmeal shampoo. I recommend Bark 2
Basics sold by Groomers Choice Pet Products. It works
really well. I use all their products in my shop. You can
even go to their website and see if you can get it yourself.
I don't think you have to be in the business to use them.

I would start off giving one bath every two weeks for a
month then every three weeks then once every four weeks
will be plenty. That will be a good schedule to get the moisture back in her skin and slow down the shedding.
Good Luck and God Bless!
