Question
Truffle
Truffle
I groom my cairn terrier bi weekly, and recently nought a stripping comb (furminator). However her head always looks so small compared to her body! She's not overweight but she is fluffy, even after I continually strip her. I'm worried she's going to overheat or something.

Answer
Hi Athena,
A furminater is not stripping but cutting her hair, rather more like tearing it. They are awful pieces of junk and will ruin the wire jacket. Toss it. If you want a tool that will rake and remove hair you are best advised to used a Mars Coat King- the wide head 32 blade type.  Stripping needs to be done by hand with a knife but the Coat King will remove the undercoat and dead wire better than nothing. It will do nothing for the head and legs but from the looks of the picture the reason the head is too small is because there is too much hair on the body.
YouTube has some good videos if you have the time to watch some. Look up Cairn Terrier grooming- hand stripping.
Shaving the belly in the summer often helps to keep them cool since they like to lay on cool floors but if she does over heat then put an ice pack on her chest between he front legs to cool her down and keep her out of the sun.
Hope this helps some
Good Luck
