Question
QUESTION: I have been grooming my pack of poodles since 1986 but they are pets.  I am getting two show dogs a Standard and toy. I have many pictures but would actually like to one day touch and examine a great cut. I want to know what best documentation or video can describe the show cuts? Maybe some do's and don'ts' too.

ANSWER: Since you are already on the road to professional sounds like to me, have a look at this website

there are a lot of Poodle folks on this site and they love to talk Poodle.
Best advice I have is get thee to a dog show and start watching what they do. Find a local poodle club and get their standards and directions. Take a course hands on.
Half the battle is drying the dog properly and having the correct equipment. Really goo shears are sooooooo important!
good luck

QUESTION: Drying the dog, what's the secret?  I let them air dry or use my hair dryer on warm to get them alittle more dry especially in the winter.

Answer
Well if you are looking to do show cuts you better learn how to dry a curly coat. The single most important thing, after the bath, to prep a coat for scissoring ( show dogs are NEVER clippered except for the pattern- all the balls/pompoms are scissored) is hand drying the coat bone dry. No dampness whatsoever! Use a warm dryer to stretch and straighten the coat so it can be correctly scissored.  No such thing as an air dried show dog...
Your pets however do not require such stringent finishing touches altho they do look much better and if you are clipping them it makes it easier.
There is no secret - just patience and elbow grease... You brush while blowing them out. There are many kinds of dryers out there, poodles require a good one. A human handheld, can take you forever.
