Question

blacklabmix
Thank you for your time.  I have a black lab/golden retreiver mix male.  He is 16 weeks old.  I feed him a high quality food but his hair is very coarse.  His face is shiny and his coat is thick and coarse.  Is this normal for the kind of dog he is or could there be an unling problem?  Thank you

Answer
Hi Tanya,

I misread your mix to be a lab/poodle! For the hybrid you own, it is not common nor uncommon to see the fur texture you describe. In other words, you own a hybrid so recessive genes can and do emerge. Labrador Retrievers often have coarse fur and Golden retrievers can have textures ranging from soft and sparse to thick and coarse.

Here is an interesting forum topic that covers fur texture: http://www.lab-retriever.net/board/fire-hydrant/7375311-different-textures-lab-h...

Also, fur texture varies greatly depending on the quality of each parent and what generation your puppy whelped from.

As always, if you are concerned that his fur is coarse due to illness, have your veterinarian examine him.
