Question
I took my 5yo pom for a hair cut about 6 months ago and when i picked her up she had been buzzed nearly down to the skin.  Since then her coat has not been the same.  The undercoat is growing however her beautiful, shiny overcoat has not come back.  Have you ever heard of this happening or do you think it may be a medical concern?

Answer
Dear Nanette,
I am so sorry to hear about your poor dog's mishap. I know what a shock it is to see results that are far from what you expected.
Be assured from what you have told me it doesn't sound
like it's a medical problem. It sounds to me as if it is just taking some time for his fur to catch up with the growth of his undercoat. Usually when a long haired dog gets shaved down it can take up to eight months for their coat to go back to it's original state. Sometimes their coat can change it's texture and even color after a cut that short, the same as with our own hair.
I wouldn't worry to much, it should work it's self out.
You could always find another groomer to take your dog to,
sometimes thinning out the undercoat can help the fur catch up or at least make it look as if it is.
If after eight months things still don't look right to you, go to your vet and ask his opinion of the situation.
I'm sure nothing is wrong, but this will at least put your mind to rest. I know my dogs mean as much to me as my children do and I would not be able to rest easily until I
had rock solid answers. Without seeing the dog and checking
her out for myself this is the best advice I can give to
you. I hope I have eased your mind somewhat. Good luck and
God Bless!
