Question
I started grooming on my own at the beginning of the year.  No school, no apprenticeship, just me, some DVD's and the book 'Notes from the Grooming Table".  I do have to say that I am holding my own pretty good.  I have a groomer that I call with 911 questions, but otherwise, I just pray a lot!

I have the basic tools, but would like to upgrade to a better quality shear, etc.

Do you have any brands that you would recommend that wouldn't be to hard on the budget?

Thanks so much!

Sara

Answer
Hi Sara,
Scissors are so different for everyone, it is hard to recommend a brand.
You will definitely need a long pair, 88's or just a little smaller, for the best scissor work.
I seriously think you can only shop for scissors if you have them in your hand.
I like bent shank shears, but they are hard to find. I always loved Andre Tisserand shears, I do not know if you can find them anymore, they went out of business.
Stay away from osters, they are heavy and do not slide easily.
I think a good pair of mid priced shears will do you just fine. Plan on spending around $60.
If you can't find scissors you can handle before you buy, get catalogs and shop for a light weight pair that has a good reputation and is priced middle of the road. You should be fine doing it that way.
You shoudl also have a curved set of ball end scissors. They are not real expensive but very necessary for topknots and round beards.
I am sorry for the delay in answering your question, the site was down yesterday!
Good luck
