Question
I have an older cocker spaniel.  She has had a chronic skin problem, and is very sensitive to touch.  My last groomer was very good with her, but has told me she can no longer groom my dog and that she (my dog) would need veteranary grooming.  My dog's current vet says this is not something they do.  Is this a common practice, is it expensive, and how do I go about finding a vet that I can trust with my dog?  Thank you!!

Answer
First off let me say I am sorry that you are experiencing this problem but yes when things get too sensitive to perform routine groomings safely - for the dog or the groomer- it is common to recommend it be performed by a vet so a sedative may be administered if necessary. I am surprised your vet refused to do it. I would look for another vet, preferably with a grooming service in house. Finding a vet you can trust is your due diligence. Ask other dog owners or check your local Google search.
The cost is higher if sedation is required, but if your Cocker is having outbreaks it will need frequent bathing. Have the hair shaved short so you can do it at home in between haircuts. Cockers are notorious for skin problems ( I had one myself years ago) so it is important that you keep on top of the hygiene issue with medicated shampoos/conditioners. Doing it at home may help your dog be less anxious.
