Pom with razor burn

Question
We had our 9 month old Pom groomed for the first time yesterday in preparation for a vacation next week.  Ever since we picked him up he has been scooting on the floor and chasing his tail.  It is really bothering him.  I feel so bad for him but I don't know what to do.  I think it is razor burn because he is pretty red where they shaved a poop trail.  Is this normal?  Is there something I can put on him to make him more comfortable?  Should I take him to the vet?  I don't know if there is a possibility something else is wrong.  I think I need to find another groomer but how do you find one you can trust?  Thanks for any help you can give me.

Answer
Poor baby! You know this has to hurt. It does sound like a clipper burn to me. You need to make sure there is no blistering in the area. If so then yes you need to take your boy in so that the area does not get infected. If there is no blisters than you can try using a hydrocortisone spray on the area. It helps with the redness and promotes healing.
Any groomer has experienced clipper burns at one time or another. This is certainly not an excuse but fact. All dogs skin is different just like us humans. Some skin tans and some burn. I tell my customers that it is like dry shaving your husbands face after a long winter beard growth. Again I am not making excuses for your groomer but it can and does happen,. Please talk to the groomer and tell them what happened, they need to know so they can make changes in their blade size. Sometimes I hand scissor the area in question so blade doesn't cut too close. There are two different cowlicks in that area (all dogs have it) and it can cut too close where the two meet. We cannot make the changes to modify the groom if we don't know the problem. If it happens a second time then find another groomer. You can go to your trusted vet for any recommendations to another groomer or just ask your friends who have dogs where they go. In any case when dropping your little ball of fur off tell the person your areas of concern. They should listen and make notes of the problem area on their chart or customers cards.
Have fun on your vacation and keep an eye on the area for infection. Hope this has been of some help.
