Question
Hi.
I've been researching day and night.  I took my Pom to a good groomer or so I thought.  I informed them that the last groomer I had seen did not get all of his knots out.. that was 3 weeks before.  I indicated that he needed to be cleaned up.
they called me within the hour he was totally buzzed down to the skin.  this is the coldest winter  on record. He's been shivering . I've spent my time finding him (a snow dog) a winter coat and he is not the same.  I am so concerned that his coat will not grow in. Please help me find some peace.  I cannot sleep I love this dog and feel like I did not do the right thing for him. Again your input would be so helpful.  As a good Pom bloodline overall he as a very think Pom coat. Please help me.  thanks Enjoy your evening.

Answer
They should have called you before shaving him. Please understand that this is a common solution to a problem in the dog world. Most groomers do not not have the time or patience to dematt a matted Pomeranian without being justly compensated. Many dogs just won't put up with it either and alot of groomers find it objectionable to submit the dog to dematting. So they just buzz it. And you are right to be concerned about the re-growth. It may take years - if ever- for it to return to it's former glory.
I am not judging you but you must understand that it is your responsibility to keep the dog in condition if you want to keep the coat full and natural and that means constant, consistent maintenance. Recently I picked up a new pom client with a severely matted coat. It took me 12 hours to comb the dog out and cost the owner $600 for 2 sessions. It needed to be split up for the comfort of the dog. But I saved the coat and now I see the dog every 4 weeks and set her up with the brushes and combs to brush her in between visits. I charge her $150 for bath, blow out and a trim. You should be able to find some for less if you become a regular client. If you can't afford to offer that to a groomer don't be surprised if you get buzzed. I am sorry but there are just not enough good professional groomers and you get what you pay for.
He will get used to it in time meanwhile get him the proper coats- maybe a sweater till it grows in some and try to figure out how you are going to learn to do more of this yourself if the cost of regular grooming is too expensive for you.
sorry I can't be more helpful but time will heal the wound... meanwhile book your next appointment. Youmay not think you need to but it can help stimulate hair growth having it worked on.
good luck
