removing undercoat of my samoyed dog

Question
Hi,  I have a samoyed dog and as you know they are doublecoated breeds so once every year he sheds his undercoat like mad.  I was wondering is there anyway that I can remove the undercoat without hurting the top coat when this shedding starts?  If so then what tools techniques are involved?  Is there some other better way to get rid of all this shedding?  Thank you much

Answer
Michael,
Wow are you taking on a big task!!!
Yes it can be done. You will need a stripper with either
ten or eight blades. Find one with a handle that is comfortable to you because you'll be using it for at least an hour or so. You'll also need a large comb for coarse coats, and an undercoat rake.
Now as far as technique ...it is a big procedure that looks easier than it actually is. All I can really tell you
in this type of forum is what each tool is for. You will need to actually be shown how to use them.
I know that some libraries carry videos on do-it-yourself
subjects. You could try looking there or maybe try a website
on animal care. Or maybe even ask around to a local groomer
to teach you a few things for a fee. That will probably be
your best bet.
The stripper tool is the one that is most dangerous. It
has 8 to 10 sharp blades that are curved like claws. This
is used to get under the thick undercoat and lift it up so
you can pull it thru breaking apart any knots while thinning out hair. You will use this quite a bit. Once
you've used this all over and gotten all the knots out use
the rake to go through the whole coat. This will take out any loose hair and any small knots that were to small for the stripper to get. Then use the coarse comb throughout the
whole coat to make sure the coat is thinned out and every
knot that the other two missed should come out with this
one.Once this is done you should give the dog a bath and
then blow dry on medium heat with a pin brush or wide tooth
comb for thick fur. Letting him air dry could cause knots to occur. Plus brush drying will thin out the coat that much
more and grab the rest of the shedding hair that is loose.
You will definitely have to brush him at least every other
day. This will cut down on the shedding tremendously.
I hope I have been of some help to you. Good Luck and
God Bless!
