Shrinking the quick in toe nails

Question
I have a indoor dog with long toe nails, is there any way to cause the quick to shrink and allow me to trim the toe nails back to the length they should be.  He recently broke one of his nails, and I think that it was because they were too long, so I'm afraid it will happen again unless I trim them back.

Answer
Lee, You can shrink back the dogs quick. It will take time and really should be started at a very young age. I have a Minature Pincher that I started docking her nails at 6 weeks old. She has very short nails probably 1/16 inch and they don't bleed ever when I trim them. But it wasn't fun or easy to do to my baby. But, gosh she has pretty feet.
Try using a Dremel tool. It works fantastic and feels a lot better then a sharp cut a nail trimmer leaves. Use the medium grid disk and hold the nail one at a time in your fingers. It takes awhile for the dog to get used to the noise and vibration but it is worth the trouble.
Hope this has been helpful.
