Question
QUESTION: Hi I read one of answer to Debra about certain breed should not be shaved or else it will ruin their cooat.I have just recented let a groomer shaved my 1 year old minuature poodle as well.  According to the groomer poodle needs to be shaved when they are puppy at least once or else their coat will not grow nice.  After shaving him, his coat has bald spot, his skin is very dry with dandraft.Probalby it was dry before I shaved him as i can't see the dandraft when his coat was long. Do you think it is good to apply extra virgin olive oil on his skin daily? Do you think essential oil base shampoo is safe for dog? Have you heard of Aroma Paw? I feel like buying their product to use on my dog but my sister said essential oil base product is harmful to dog as no Vet ever recommend that.

ANSWER: Alicia,
It takes about 18 months for the adult coat to come in but if you shave the dog as a pup it may have a couple of bald spots just because it is immature and uneven. Consistent grooming will help it develop evenly- every 8 weeks at least.
Dandruff can be an indication of many things. Not diluting the shampoo or rinsing it completely can be a cause. Not enough brushing to stimulate the natural oils and skin another. Food can be a cause. A good shampoo is a product called Dermaplex but even that should be diluted for a puppy. Poodles should not get cream rinses or oils unless the dog is a show dog and you are frequently washing and spraying the dog. Better choose a high quality dog food and get the oils from the inside out - nutrition is the best way to control coat and skin. Stay away from cheap supermarket brands and study the high quality brands.
Be care with oils as they may cause irritation or skin reactions.
good luck

QUESTION: Hi, thanks for your reply. Oil wont make his skin more moisture but will cause him more trouble? I have been applying olive oil on his skin daily and even thought of buying essential oil base grooming product on his skin.

Answer
it should not be necessary to oil the dogs coat. As I said work from the inside out. Add the olive oil to the food if you must tho wild salmon oil is usually the preferred additive. Oiling  will make the coat limp and greasy making it difficult to scissor. Frequent brushing will bring the natural oils up and shed dead skin. Some dogs have a lot of dander but a poodle should not be one of them which is why the are consider "hypo allergenic"
If you continue to have a problem you should see a vet who is a specialist in dermatology and/or nutrition if what I suggested does not help.
