Bad odor around dogs mouth

My cocker spaniel seems to always have a bad odor around his mouth.  Sometimes it's so bad that you can smell it from across the room!  It's like the hair around his mouth stinks, but even when we wash him or brush his teeth it still smells bad.  What can we do?  Is there a reason for the smell? HELP!

There are many reasons for bad breath in a dog. Sorry about the delay in answering my mom was in the hospital. Brushing the teeth is very good, but sometimes there may be a problem with the gums, cracked tooth or something else that should be checked out by a vet. The hair by the mouth should be clean and or clipped real short. But, again there may be an issue that is making the hair smell. Hope this helps.
