My poodle was shaved!

Question
I just took my 1.5 year old toy poodle and my 10 month old miniature poodle to a goroomer and asked for a puppy cut on both.  I picked them up 3 hours later to find they were shaved!  She didnt shave the ears or the tail. The dogs had clipper burn on side of the face and back of legs. I live in Michigan where it gets -8 degrees!  I do not trust the groomer.  The one before this cut my dogs tongue and let him fall off the table.  I want to groom them myself.....where do I start?  Is there videos?  I have the Poodle clipping and Grooming by Kalstone.  I just want to know from your experince what do I use for my babies?  HELP!

sorry it's taking me so long to answer but I was at Westminster for the full 5 days of events.
Sounds like a disaster but it may have taken 2 to tango in this instance and if you want to do it yourself you will find out how these things can happen. Not saying they ever should but if you don't keep your dogs groomed monthly you and you get an inexperienced/lazy/thoughtless groomer this is the result of such a recipe, unfortunately.
Kalstone  or Sam Kohl are 2 good books- there are so many. Other than that, hundreds of free Videos on youtube. Professional videos too. Oster the clipper company has books, but you will have to spend for the equipment - initial set up will cost about $500. You'll need everything and cheap is no substitute for quality- equipment comes in all levels. I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for if you know what you are looking for.
It's not as easy as you think. You will need some hands on guidance. Join a poodle club too.
So do some research and then come back with some specific questions and I will help you as much as I can. Just backed up at the moment from being at the show.
