Grooming our difficult dog at home

Question
We have a very sweet 30 lb. 9year old long hair dog who refuses to ride in a vehicle.  He bites at us when we try to pick him up to take him to the groomer.  He also bites at us when we try to brush him or cut his hair.  He becomes very matted, especially in the back end.  When he has to go the the bathroom - it becomes a real mess.  Is there someway to make him relax so that we can accomplish this without traumatizing him?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
After 9 years me thinks the damage was done long ago... and most likely because you waited toooooooo long between groomings when there was nothing else to do but dematt - if you didn't let them shave him down.
Frankly, this is a training issue. If you only take the dog in the car to go the vets and the groomer's he ain't gonna wanna go! Period. Also the don't wait until the butt mess is so bad everybody is gagging and complaining, making the dog feel embarrassed.
Try finding a mobile groomer- that will eliminate the car battle.
You need to be on a set schedule so the dog gets used to the process.
Give the mobile folks a heads up too.
