Question
Hi there,

We have a german shepherd aged 10 with a bad skin condition which won't seem to go away. We have been advised by the vet to clip her to shorten her hair. I was wondering what kind/brand of clippers you would recommend for heavy duty clipping for German Shepherds?

Thanks very much indeed :)

Mart.

Answer
Hi Martin,
You need to purchase a heavy-duty clipper, such as the two-speed Andis: http://www.petedge.com/product/Grooming/Clippers-Blades/Clippers/Andis-AGRC-Powe...

Secondly, purchase one or two #7FC blades: http://www.petedge.com/product/Grooming/Clippers-Blades/Clipper-Blades/Andis-Ult...

If you purchase one blade, you will need to buy a coolant to spray on the blade when it gets hot: http://www.petedge.com/product/Top-Performance-ClipperCool/43492.uts I suggest buying two blades in the case one becomes too dull or hot to use.

Make sure your dog is clean and completely dry before you clip her. You can, however clip her in advance but it's much more timely to clip dirty fur and it will quickly dull your blades. It is unlikely, but if your dog has pink skin beneath the fur, you will want to monitor lengthy sun exposure until the fur grows to about 1". You can not buy a clipper blade that will leave her fur 1" long, yet still clip through the dense coat.

Thank-you and good luck!
