Skin cut

Question
Dear Gail.A,
I have a six months male poodle. He has skin cut recently. Is it good to have skin cut? People said that poodle pup is better to have skin cut. So the hair will become more thick and curly. Is it correct? Is it common that the pup will be unhappy due to hair cut? I think that my pup is ok. His tail was up (still confident)while having a walk after skin cut. Please kindly advise.

Best,
Stephen

Answer
Hi,

I am so sorry about the delay, my Internet was down for 2 days and I was busy at work. I do not believe that getting a pup poodle shaved down will make the hair grow any better, in fact, I believe it is better to get the pups done much earlier than 6 months so that the dog is used to grooming and also for nature to take its course. Puppies have one kind of hair and adults have another. It is a process that they go through gradually as the dog grows. If you like the dog shaved down that is fine. I do that all the time but if you want a more traditional poodle clip you have to put the time in to brushing and combing the coat all the time. I mean a few times a week at least. The dog will react to a shavedown cut if people make him feel like he or she does not look good. It is funny. They do not know exactly what they look like, but they do respond to positive reactions from humans. So, technically it does not matter if the coat is long, short or a really bad haircut as long as you make them feel like they look great with praise and positive comments like "on my how pretty you look" it does not really matter. It is you that makes them feel good about themselves. I hope this helps. And if you have any more questions please do not hesitate to write. Congratulations on your new pup and I hope you have many happy and healthy years to come. Thanks.

Gail
