Question
I have an 8 month old puppy that i recieved in june when she was six weeks old. she is an american bulldog. My question is she has a distinct body odor. I bathe her once a week it is very strong. How can I contain the smell? she is an indoor dog and very spoiled. Is there any home remedies or anything I can use, anything would be of great value. also I clean her blankets once a week with tide perfume free detergent thank you!

Answer
American Bulldogs are such beautiful dogs!! However, with their short coat they sometimes "sweat" a lovely musky smell... it is common on a lot of the very short haired bulldog types.

Sometimes diet (you say you you spoil...with what? Just like we can eat garlic and have it emanate from our pores, treats and junky food can contribute to improper PH and balance issues) can have a huge impact. A milder diet will help tone down the natural odor of your pup. Don't make food changes too quickly, or you can actually make the odor worse!

There are shampoos, also that can help but you'll have to make sure that one that is great at deodorizing isn't too harsh on your girl's skin. Fresh n'Clean, available at most retailers (I've seen it at my local Walmart, Petsmart, Petco) is a great, long lasting shampoo and the deodorant spray you can buy (in the aerosol can) is one of the best "between baths" spray that'll help keep the smell at bay.

Remember to mention this issue to your vet, as well, as some odors can be traced to specific issues, (yeasty smells can be a bacterial infection, tuna smells can be an anal gland issue, etc).
