Pomeranian and Chihuaha mix needs summer haircut

Question
I have a Pomeranian and Chihuahua mix that needs a summer haircut that won't make him look ugly. I love his long hair, but it is hot so he needs to cut it. What should I do?

Answer
Hi
I would guess that your little dog has an undercoat, which is making him very hot.
If he has an undercoat, he sheds, right?  So you need to cut the long hair ABOVE the undercoat so he won't look funny.
Get him clipped down at the groomers and ask for them to do him with a 4F or 5F, and maybe do a spot on his neck behind the ear, but toward his chest so you can see how short it will be.  Then you can say, "shorter" or "no thanks"
If you opt to not have his hair cut, you can have it trimmed under his neck, (if that is very full) and his britches, and then have his tummy shaved and under his arms. He will also get a bath and thorough combing to get most of the undercoat out.
It may take until Christmas for this all to grow back, so be conservative with the cut.
I will tell you though, that we have some that get clipped down with a 7F, and although it is short, the dog is very comfortable and the hair grows back beautifully.  Your groomer can help you decide what to do, just make sure that when you make an appointment, you tell them you are going to need some help and some suggestions on what they are going to do before you leave as you are concerned about him not looking like himself if he gets a serious haircut.
Good luck
