Question
I have a fifteen month old Golden. My boyfriend and I are in a delema over his claws. I think you are just suppose to clip the tops off of his claws and dew claws and try not to cut the quick. My boyfriend believes you should take it back to the quick often to keep from developing a thick quick. Please advise....

Answer
This question is a tricky one because it really matters what you as a pet owner wants. On one hand you are correct because the new growth is what gets sharp and curves so yes you would just take the (hollow) part. Look underneath the foot on the back side of the nail. Only cut in the hollow and all should be okay. On the other hand your boyfriend is correct. Show people (dock) the nail so the judge may see how the foot is built. It is a pretty look however, if your not careful the nail may become infected. It is extremely painful for the dog and bleeding is in excess. Also, you risk the dog becoming fearful of the one that clips the nail. I myself prefer to use a grinder on the nails. Once the dog gets used to the vibration, it works wonderfully.
