sedation?

Question
Yesterday, I took my miniature poodle/Bicon mix neutered male to a groomer for the first time. I adopted this dog from our city's animal shelter. He's always full of energy with lots of "smiles." I picked him up at noon and he looked great, but very serious.

He spent most of the day sleeping, but seemed to enjoy his usual walks. This little dog use to always "smile" (open mouth - happy face) and liked to chew or nibble my fingers or toes playfully. Now he only opens his mouth to eat and never nibbles on my digits. The groomer said that he would be very tired after being groomed because he was going to play with her 9 month chihuaha - they got along fine.

I'm just asking how to know whether the groomer sedated my dog. He seems fine, but is not the same dog.

Answer
There really is no way to know for sure that I know of.  It is very common for a dog to be exauhsted after a day of grooming just because it can be stressful for him and drain him of his energy for the day.  If he really seems to be that different maybe you should take him to a different groomer the next time and see if he acts the same way. No groomer can sedate your dog without your permission and it should be done under the supervision of a vet incase of any adverse reaction.  For a groomer to give a dog something without the owner's knowledge would be a bad idea because all dogs react differently and could have underlying health condition which were not disclosed by the owner.  I don't know any groomer who would do such a thing and in my honest opinion he is probably just tired but if you are still worried I'd take him somewhere else or ask to to a straight through groom where you stay with the dog.  Let me know if I can help you anymore.
