Question

Strip A' Griff?
Hi, I have absolutely no intention of showing my purebred Griffon's, but I do have to admit that it looks nice. My questions are as follows:

Does the coat of a stripped Griff look better than a non-stripped one?  My dog's coats are actually kind of silky soft (and unfortunately they have very, very thin undercoats because the wrong brushed was used when they were young and it got brushed off, plus they never had thick coats in the first place, I think)?

What can you do to help assist hair growth?  Will stripping lessen their hair or make it grow more?  Right now, being in a raw diet and added EFA's seemed to have helped (my past groomer told me that it will never re-grow but it did a bit)?

Thank you!

Answer
Hi Teddy,
I strip alot of pet Griffs and the difference is blatantly obvious. First it is in the color. Second in the texture. THe undercoat is really not the issue. You don't say how old the dog is. It often takes up to 2-3 years for the correct coat to come in if it has not been handled correctly. Even the thinner coats can be made to be harder, thicker and more colorful if you strip them. It takes dedication, perseverance and experience. BUT it IS doable. I have done it many times.
So if you are determined, you can do it.  Your diet is correct and the supplements on the money. Now you just have to learn the technique and stick to it. Let the whole coat grow out for at least 8 months- pick at it- especially the head. Keep it clean and brushed out. Use a pin brush and metal comb. You dog may not have an undercoat- many don't. Your past groomer is WRONG. Don't listen to groomers who have no experience in hand stripping or have little knowledge of Griffs. I have been doing them for many years and have had tremendous results in beefing up skimpy coats by rotating the coat on a monthly basis. Take some out - leave some in. What grows bak bulks up what is left. Start again every month.
If that pic is your dog it's a cutey. If it is young enough to start over (under 3) I would say go for it!
good luck
