Question
Hi Doreen, After picking up my dog from the groomer today, I noticed that she was complaining (having pain). I noticed that he private areas... that were shaven... were raw. I called the groomer but they were closed for the evening. What can I do to help Bella my Bichon. She seems very distressed. We've been putting cold compresses to help alleviate it. What can we do for her. I hope you can help us.

Answer
Dear Elena,
I am so sorry to hear your baby has been injured by a groomer. Unfortunately it does happen. The groomer should have told you about it and given you instructions on how to care for it.
It's a case of razor burn. They got to close with a semi-hot/hot razor. It can be temporarily painful but usually not long term. Hopefully it is just a minor burn.
If you see raw open wounds, like a 2nd or 3rd degree burn please take her to a vet ASAP. She will most likely need anti-biotic burn cream.
As long as there are no bubbles or raw skin leaking a clear fluid she should be just fine in a day or so.
If the area is just red and irritated then keep up the good work with the cold compress and call your vet's emergency number and ask what kind of pain relief medicine she can have. Sometimes dogs can be given baby Tylenol or something of that nature to relieve the pain. I am not a vet so I wouldn't think of telling you to give any type of medicine without being absolutely sure of what I was telling you. I do know that benadryl can be given for pain
and for itching relief but as far as the dosage your vet will no your dog best.
If this is a first time thing with your regular groomer it might be an honest mistake that went unnoticed, you should bring it to their attention and ask them to pay for the vet visit if there ends up being one. If he/she declines I recommend looking for a new groomer and walk away before anything else happens to your baby.
I would also recommend putting some aloe juice from the plant itself if you have it or some type of topical burn cream (over the counter) for now till you get it looked at if it is severe. Try to stop her from licking her wound to much the air is good for it. I know that is easier said than done. Just if you see her try and avert her attention elsewhere for awhile.
One more thing , you can clean it gently with peroxide to make sure it doesn't get infected.
I hope I have been of some help to you!
Good luck and God Bless!
Doreen
