Question
Hi there, i wanted to know if there is a correct way in trimming my dog's nails, I have tried but she usually pulls back as though it hurts her. I am not too sure how to do this procedure. I was my first time and I only got to cut one. HELP!!!

Answer
Ikca,
  Hello,
I understand your frustration. Yes, there is a certain way to trim their nails.
First off there are two types of nail trimmers, the guliteen and the pliers style. I use the pliers style, namely because they are safer and easier to use. You stand less of a chance of hurting the animals especially if you are a beginner at the procedure.
I will try to describe the handling procedure as easily and accurately as possible to you, but it is sometimes hard to convey in writing what is simple to show if you know what I mean.
First off take a firm but not vise like hold of the paw you will be working on. Spread the toe you will be trimming apart from the rest enough to get the clippers and your fingers in place comfortably without hurting the animal. Once you do this with your other hand feel the nail for a slight groove in the nail approximately where the nail curves. Once you find it place the clipper's blade right on it and cut with one firm/quick clip so you cut clean thru and not end up partially cutting and tearing the rest off.
Follow the same procedure for the rest including the due claw if there is one.
A helpful hint: if the nails are white/clear and you can see the pink vein inside then you can use that as a guide also. Place the clipper blade slightly after where the vein ends this will ensure you don't cut it.
If the nails are black/dark and you cannot see the vein then to be on the safe side if you can't find the groove in the nail just place the blade in the curve right before the point starts on the nail. This way you're at least trimming them even if you're not cutting off enough you're not risking cutting the vein in the nail.
To make sure the nails are smooth and not jagged use a nail file, not metal, on the nails just like you would your
own. Also take the animal for a walk on pavement that will grind them down and smooth them out. Of course it will need to be for more than one five min walk but 30 min every day or every other day will do it and is also a good way to maintain them.
Always keep some quick stop powder on hand when you trim the nails of animal. If you cut the vein this will stop the bleeding pretty much immediately.
If you are real nervous or the animal moves more than you can keep them still then please re-think doing it on your own and seek professional help. It usually only costs
5 to 10 dollars to just have the nails clipped and most groomers do this on a walk-in basis, just call ahead out of courtesy in case they are really busy and they will let you know the best time to come so they can get you in and out.
I hope I have been helpful.
Good luck and God Bless !
