Question
we own a Norweigan Elkhound. Four years old. As you know we need a REAL good clipper. Can't take him to a groomer....he is somewhat hyper and nasty.

Answer
Dennis,
there is no way I would recommend your using a clipper of any kind on your elkhound. I do not believe is shearing these types of dogs- ever. I have copied the following from the NEC web in case you have not looked at it. Especially the last line. Shaving the coat ruins it and defeats natures purpose.

"There are several methods for dealing with the elkhound's shedding periods. Daily grooming is especially important to speed removal of the old coat and encourage new growth. A warm bath can also act to facilitate the transition between old and new coats. One of the advantages of the Norwegian Elkhound is the lack of a pronounced 'doggy' odor.

Even though the elkhound originated in a northern climate, it adjusts easily to warmer climates when provided with ample shade, water and air conditioning. The dual coat acts as insulation against both heat and cold."

If you have another reason to use a clipper, I would say to get a heavy duty Oster.
But please, don't shear the dog. Shed him as necessary. Get a 4.0 HV blower and blow out the under coat after the bath. Do it outside cause the fur will fly. Put his leash and collar on. Attach it to a post or rail or even a tree.
Spending more time grooming the dog through out the year will make this a much easier process during the molting seasons.

please feel free to come back with other questions.
