Question
Hi,
I have a Bichon Frise and i want to know which clippers would work best for my bichon and which blades to use. I would also want to know which scissors to use. Do you happen to know of a good video that will teach me how to groom my bichon.

Answer
Hi Nohemi,
What a lovely name!
Bichon Frise are sweet little dogs and can get out of hand quickly if you don't stay on top of the grooming. The most important thing you have to learn is how to brush the dog. Since there are many kinds of slicker brushes on the market, it is important you get one that does scratch the skin. I use Miller's Forge Doggy Man. The large size. Then you have to have the correct comb- a medium fine Greyhound comb. There are many brands of clippers and it really takes practice to get the best out of them. Think of them as a pencil and you will at least have the grip correctly. Oster, Andis, Laube are the most popular with groomers. They come with a #10 blade which cuts close to the skin and is used for the sanitary part of the job, i.e. the belly, butt and feet. If the dog has a lot of matts and you can't comb them out then use that blade to shave the dog down. Once you get the dog in shape a #4 skip tooth blade all over will keep the dog manageable year round, provided you do it once a month.
For a shear on an Bichon I have always used Geib Buttercut 8 inch shears. Bent shank or straight- I prefer bent shank tho I was not taught with them.
There are a ton of videos out there but have you tried contacting your local Bichon Club?  I can't recommend any particular because I learned from a breeder/handler and that is all hand scissoring- like a poodle. The pattern is the only difference. Check that out first. Try going to a dog show as well and take some pictures- look at the handlers as they prepare the dog. Maybe you can have the dog groomed professionally then follow the pattern they set if it is good one. The most important thing I can tell you is to make sure you brush the dog out thoroughly before you bathe it. Then blowing it dry is the second most important thing before you cut it. The head is scissored not clippered so you can get that unique bell shape.
Hope this helped. If you have a specific question please come back.
