clipping nails

Question
My dog is 1 1/2 years old and I have clipped her nails only once. The time i did it, i cut one a little to short and it bled. Now she is terrified of the clippers. Soon as i get them out she runs and hinds and wont come near me. Is there a mild sedative that i can give her? Her nails are getting very long and vets are very expensive.

Answer
Jodie you will need to work this out without meds. I never recommend it and sometimes it even makes it worse so what you need to do is start to get her used to handling those feet a bit at a time. You start by handling them every day. It could be that the clippers you are using are not of a very good quality and are actually hurting her by putting too much pressure on the nail when you press down. I don't have access to Australian pet catalogues and products but a company called Millers Forge makes a good guillotine style clipper that I like here.  You didn't say what kind of dog you have but make sure you get the correct size so you get the correct pressure for a clean cut.
You don't have to take her to a vet either. Try going to a local groomer and almost all will do it for a nominal fee. Have them do it a couple of times then maybe she will get used to it and let you do it as she feels more secure.
good luck!
