Question
I take my pom to the groomer in the summer time and get her clipped very short. (I live in the humid south!) I would like to just do it on my own, but when I have tried the clippers wouldn't budge through her fur. (I had just been using human hair clippers.) Is there a specific type or brand of clipper you could suggest for her fur type? I have seen several advertised but didn't want to get one that wouldn't work. Thank you!

Answer
I always bathe my poms before doing any clipper work. The warm water relaxes the pores and the hair releases easier. I then dry and brush them throughly before I put my blades on the dog. If not the blades won't go through wet hair and they will rust.
Brush the dog well paying special attention to the rough of the neck and the hide qaurters. The hair is extremely dense in these areas.
Buy a pair of Oster A-5 Clippers. They usually come with one blade sometimes a #10. This blade can be used on the tummy and rectal area. You will need to also purchase a #7F blade, (the #7 is a finishing blade) Start at the rough of the neck and clipper down towards the rear. There are 3 main areas that are easy to cut dogs. These areas are the hock (heal on back legs) the flank (the waist flap) and the arm pit (the flap above the elbow). Please be cautious in these areas. Make sure you can see the teeth of the blade and where your cutting at all times.
If the blade won't cut through then stop and rebrush the problem area then try again.
When using clippers let the blade work, not your hand. Too many people push through the hair and wonder why their blades don't cut. Take your time and let the blade cut while you just hold a little pressure on the clipper.
Oil your blades after each use. I still have blades that I purchased in 1983. So it is a good investment.
Your initial cost is about $150.00 from Pet Edge. But, if you don't have to go to your groomer your paying for your clippers in a short time.
