cocker spaniel clippers

Question
I wonder if you could tell me what owner rating I should buy when getting a set of clippers for a cocker spaniel.  The ones I purchased seem to bog down due to the hair thickness.

Do you have a recommendation for what clippers we should get?

Thanks,

Terry

Answer
Hi Terry,
It is best to purchase a heavy-duty clipper. Oftentimes when people decide to groom their dog they select an inferior clipper in an effort to save money or because they simply don't know what type of clipper to buy.

I like the Andis clipper, which comes equipped with one or two speeds. An Andis clipper -- if maintained -- will outlast the life of your cocker spaniel.

You didn't mention the condition of your cocker's coat; if matted, you will need to make sure you have the correct blade length.

Hopefully you have the receipt and you can return the clippers. I would not purchase clippers from a pet store. You can save at least $50.00 if you purchase online from such places as Pet Edge http://www.petedge.com/product/Grooming/Clippers-Blades/Clippers/Andis-UltraEdge... or Ryan's Pet Supply http://www.ryanspet.com/catItem.aspx

Further, I would not purchase a clipper based solely on 'owner ratings' because they likely do not have experience with multiple brands, nor will they have experience with a particular clipper's use on various breeds.

Good luck and if you have additional questions regarding which blades to purchase, I can help.
Thanks,
Becca
