Older Westie Shedding

Question
We have a 12 year old Westie.  She had a skin condition back in January called Mallasezia. We had to treat with both oral medications and a bathe her twice weekly with medication shampoo. I trimmed her back at the time, to make it easier for the shampoo to contact her skin. I trimmed her almost 3 months ago and her fur lenth has hardly changed and she seems to be shedding horribly...more then usual.  Her fur is very soft and fluffy as opposed to the wirey way it should be.  Do you have any suggestions for grooming her at this time?

Answer
Dear Liz,
You sound like a very devoted pet lover. I'm sure you Westie appreciates all the loving attention you give her.
I am not familiar with this skin disorder however, I feel that your pet's as in humans skin has done a change.
The hair shaft can change dramatically after a trauma to the skin. Take a pet that has had surgery or been bitten by another dog. The hair may not come back at all or may come in a different color.
I have had many Schnauzers that come in to my shop that have black spots from having their vaccines or from rubbing on the doggie door.
Terriers are sensitive skin dogs. They tend to have a lot of problems in that area.
Your Westie sounds as if she has grown back a puppy type coat with the soft and no coarse hair. You can keep her in a pattern on the back and leave the shirt a little longer. It will be comfortable for her and easier for you.
Just think of her going through her second puppyhood.
