Question
I have a female black lab that is 3 years old an is fixed so she cant whelp. she licks her feet all day all night just licks them. We have tried everything to get her to stop. She licks the top the bottom and inbetween. We have had her feet checked out and there is nothing wrong with them. Is there anything that you know of we could spray on her feet that will keep her from licking and over time break the habit. Thanks

Answer
there are several reasons for foot licking. Dogs have sweat gland in their feet and may be harboring a fungus or yeast infection there. Yeast has a sweet taste dogs crave. It ends up being a vicious cycle of itch, lick, wet, fungus growth. It could also be allergies if the dog spends lots of time out of doors in grass, tree sap on wet leaves, salts from snow and ice maintenance, etc. Food allergies can also trigger this. Once a dog begins this habit it becomes very difficult to stop. Try soaking them in epsom salts, dry them and powder them with a good quality anti-bacterial foot powder. Witch Hazel can sooth the itch also.
Spraying them with a product like Bitter Apple sometimes helps but it just makes them wet which is what you are trying to avoid. If the dog wears boots that can help break the cycle but you have to break the cycle in order to get the foot to dry.
It is also the neurotic behavior of a bored dog.  An active dog does not have time to lick it's feet. Try spending more structured time with your pet. Verbally scold the dog when you catch him licking his feet- let him know it's not acceptable.

hope this helps you understand a little better. There are no silver bullets to stop it quick. Have your vet do some research or find a different vet.
This is not really a grooming question so you may want to consult the vet page.
