QuestionI just aquired a Pug. He is a great dog but stinks. His texture on his fur in oily and smelly. He is constantly scratching. I bathe him in oatmeal bath for dogs. Do you have any suggestions for this breed. I have a boxer and she never stinks.
Answeryou don't say how old this dog is, nor do I know what his diet is. These are often reasons for the smell. Age has a lot to do with odor as does an incorrect diet- for that particular animal. Allergies are often the culprit while in others it's hormonal.
I have had pugs that smell but often the odor comes from yeast in the folds of the skin. I am not a fan of oatmeal baths. I find them to be even more irritating. I use fatty shampoos on oily skin. And way more frequently- like every 5-7 days. Dilute the shampoo and make sure you rinse well. Also if you don't dry the dog the moisture will stay in the folds and creases and start fungal infections - especially around the eyes- which reeeeeeealllly stink!
Try more frequent baths with a shampoo such as Dermaplex or if really persistent than you need an anti-microbial one that you can get on PetMeds.com.
You should examine the dogs diet as well. some dogs are highly allergic to grains and need to be fed a completely different style of food- such as the raw diets.
Often if this is a young dog it will clear itself up at around 7-9 years of age but in the meantime- frequent baths, vigilance about food are the most common remedies.
if all this fails see your vet
good luck!
