Question
I have a 3 pound Yorkshire terrier and want to begin grooming and trimming her hair myself. I do not know what clippers to use, which size blade and then where to start!!! Can you please help me begin? Her coat is so lovely that I am hesitant to start but the alternative is a $45.00 grooming!!!
She likes to move around a lot and trimming her face my be a real challenge!!!
Thanks for any suggestions...

Answer
Sherry,
Why clip it if you can maintain it as is. You'll ruin the drape and weight of the coat if you put clippers to it. You didn't say where you are located but I can tell you that $45 for a grooming is incredibly reasonable. You should consider doing it a couple of time to see how it is done. Let them train her for you.

Otherwise the first thing you should do is look on the internet for a video that shows how to groom a Yorkie.
There is a company called AllSystems that makes fabulous products- get them through catalogues or direct. Chris Cristanson has the best brushes

Personally if I had 3 pound Yorkie client - I would never put  a clipper to the coat. I would hand scissor it. The biggest part of grooming yorkies is brushing and combing on a regular basis. Good scissors are expensive. You'll need a good metal greyhound style comb and pin brush. Both of the above companies sell these things.

If you trim her face be very careful around her eyes. If she wiggles alot try holding her by the scruff of her neck to immobilize her so you don't hurt her. Actually if you continue to let the bits on her nose grow eventually they will be long enough to weigh itself down and not stick up. It is not cut in a traditional yorkie pattern but left long to blend in.
But get a video- your best bet.
good luck
