Question
I have an eight year old Newfoundland dog, we have been taking her to the same groomer for over a year and always ask for the same cut, winter or summer.  "Summer Cut" was what we asked for but today we picked her up from the same groomer and they had shaved her completely from the top of her head to the tip of her tail. It dumbfounds me that somebody would do this to a Newfoundland dog. Does asking for a summer cut mean shaving to some groomers?

Answer
Hello Beverly.
Unfortunately, yes it does. Typically a summer cut does mean as short as possible. Just some groomers should be a bit smarter and see that it is a Newfoundland Dog, and see that it has never been shaved before, and clarify what a summer cut does typically mean. The coat should grow back, it just might have a different texture to it and probably not be as glossy as it should have been before.
A groomer should always discuss with the clients the risks of shaving a dog that is not meant to be shaved. And a groomer should always clarify the type of cut that is being performed on the dog before proceeding. Alot of clients do not know the terminology that we know, and alot of the meanings vary from groomer to groomer. Next time, ask for a big tidy up, maybe shave the belly (helps the dog cool down by laying on something cool, like wet pavement). Clarify that you do not want your dog shaved, and even end it off by asking "so what exactly are you going to be doing to my dog?" And make sure you get a specific answer. I'm sorry to hear about what happened.
