Question
Hi, I am trying to hand strip my wire fox puppy for the first time with a pumice stone stick (like the Chris Christensen sculpting stones)and I was wondering why is it that when I strip her in the black areas of her coat does the hair underneath the black fur seem to be white?  It seems like the more I strip her in the black area more white is starting to show through on her coat. Is this correct?  Should I keep stripping her down?  I don't want to loose the black color on her! What do you think? Thanks

Answer
Hi Shannon
Good for you doing this yourself but don't get discouraged. There are 2 coats growing- the wire and the undercoat sometimes called the underwear. You have to strip out the white coat as well so the black comes back hard and shiny. It will come in black if you got the root out. If you just tear or break it the hair will just keep growing softer weaker and lose texture.  You may need to take it right to the skin and not just to the underwear. It takes longer for the wire to reappear if it has to push it's way back through the undercoat.
Also you may want to get a real stripping knife for the back. The detail sticks are better for the flat or fine work and are too delicate for such a workout. The pumice leaves gritty residue and chalk will give you a better grip to pull .
Keep pulling it all the way down and the black will return
Good luck!
